Special Features: Samad Beh-Rang (Behrangi) and his masterpiece The Little Black Fish are very well known to the Iranian community, and numerous efforts have been made to introduce this timeless story to the new generation of Iranians living abroad. What motivated me to undertake this task was the confusion of our youngsters about Iran, their effort to make a choice between one form of regime versus another, their lack of interest and awareness on political issues, their eagerness to learn more and to get involved. My objective is to help this group to better understand the people of Iran, their lives, their hardships, their social relations, and to hopefully make a difference. The story of The Little Black Fish is told by an old fish to her children and grand children about a little black fish who, tired and dissatisfied with his tedious life in a small brook without any aspiration or purpose, decides to leave the place in search of the sea, acquire experience and awareness, and learn about life in other parts of the world. The Little Black Fish embarks on this eye-opening journey with the spirit of a dreamer experiencing an awakening and prospects of the great deeds he would perform; but in the process he does more than that. The main character, The Little Black Fish, is an ordinary child with big ambitions. He is very special because of his bravery, intelligence and thirst for knowledge and awareness. He lives in a community where most members spend their lives absorbed in their meager worlds and insignificant personal issues, some to wake up at the end and find out that they have wasted their lives in vain, having lived the same life for generations with no aspiration or purpose. Samad focused on the need to an educational system that would orient the children within their own world, enable them to play a useful part in the undeniable need for fundamental changes to eradicate the unfavorable conditions in a society where the majority of the hard working population has a hand-to-mouth existence. His writings are filled with hope, stamina for life, need for education, awareness, wisdom; portraying realities of life. Samad’s heroes are real life children with day-to-day personal and social complexities. He teaches his young readers to look deeper into the problems, think about their causes and the prospects of finding solutions for them. He shows them how they should try to change the unfortunate conditions they find themselves in, motivates them to put the interests of others ahead of their own, and encourages them to join forces to achieve their goals. Hoping this translation will be of service to our children and juveniles, here is a quote from Samad Beh-Rang in Ooldooz: “A beam, no matter how feeble, is still a light.” Ruby Emam
